In the days of the Raj, this still existent bungalow, the residence of a British couple, was handed over to His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. In 1902, a group of social activists lead by the then Chief Justice of the Mysore High Court, Sri Chandrashekar Iyer approached His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore to start a social and recreation club in the southern suburb of Chamarajapet, Bangalore. The Maharaja generously agreed to grant the bungalow and surrounding land to them.

This was the modest beginning of the Bangalore City Institute. In the early days, the club could boast of princely facilities like a cards room, a reading room, a billiards table and a tennis court. Over the years the club has added more sports and recreational facilities culminating in the modern Centenary Building inaugurated in the year 2002. It has affiliations with major clubs in Karnataka and the rest of India thus opening its doors to members of these clubs to come and experience the facilities offered by a prestigious club.
